Discovering the Outdoors at Turkey Run
Earlier this year, a group of fourth grade students from Vigo County experienced the beauty and adventure of Turkey Run State Park thanks to the Discover the Outdoors program. From trekking through the park’s canyons to history lessons from park staff, the day was filled with hands-on exploration and experiences the students are sure to remember.
“I think the best part of this trip was walking in the creek and being in the pretty nature,” said Bryleigh, a student on the trip. “I really enjoyed climbing the waterfall. My favorite part of it was being with friends and family. I loved the suspension bridge.”
For many students, the trip provided their first opportunity to explore one of Indiana’s most beloved parks. As the cool, early morning canyons filled with the sound of laughs and grinning faces, the excitement and appreciation for the day’s activities became evident. After exploring the creeks and canyons, spotting wildlife, and learning about local history, the students reflected on their trips, reinforcing the power of getting kids outdoors.
Discover the Outdoors continues to expand its reach thanks to the generosity of our donors. In the 2026-27 school year alone, more than 5,000 students from 72 different schools will venture to an Indiana State Parks property. Since 2013, when the program began, nearly 36,000 Hoosier students have experienced a transformative outdoor experience.
“I cannot express enough how much my students, colleagues, and our school community enjoyed the field trip,” said Andrea Schmick, Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary School teacher. “The number of students who came up to me, offering hugs and heartfelt thanks for writing the grant, was truly overwhelming and deeply appreciated.”
Each Discover the Outdoors trip provides an opportunity for students to create lasting memories and a connection to Indiana’s outdoors.
